Greensands Academy Update
Reigate Priory School had been working together with Dovers Green School, Holmesdale Community Infant School, Wray Common Primary School, St John’s Primary School and Reigate School to create a local Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). Each of the schools’ applications were reviewed for approval by the Regional Academy Board. Approval is necessary to release funds from the Department of Education to permit schools to continue with the academy conversion process.
Unfortunately, and despite prolonged and concerted efforts on behalf of the Head, Governors and members of the Greensands MAT, Reigate Priory School’s academy order was deferred. Consequently, Reigate Priory is not an academy and remains a Community Maintained Junior School. This is a direct result of the significant challenges presented by, and surrounding, the Grade 1 Monument status of the Priory School building and meant that Reigate Priory School was not able to make its academy conversion in line with the other local schools.
This was not an altogether unexpected outcome but the school remains committed to doing everything it can to resolve the issues related to the building. However, this will require the same commitment and involvement from Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, Surrey County Council and the Department of Education.
The other schools within the MAT have had their applications approved and Greensands MAT has existed since September 2017. However, due to a current building project, St. Johns Primary School’s conversion is delayed until all works have been completed and signed off by the County Council.
