Pupil Premium
Pupil Premium funding in England is allocated to schools for pupils who meet specific low-income, care, or armed forces criteria, distinct from the broader Free School Meals (FSM) expansion introduced in September 2026. If your child is eligible for Pupil Premium Funding, they are then eligible for extra support academically from the Pupil Premium Department. In addition, it also enables access to the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme.
There are three eligibility categories:-
- Targeted Free School Meals (Ever 6 FSM): Pupils eligible for benefit-based free school meals currently or at any point in the past 6 years. This requires households receiving Universal Credit with an annual net earned income of £7,400 or less, alongside legacy benefits (eg income related ESA, guarantee element of Pension Credit) and those with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF).
- Looked-After and Previously Looked-After Children (LAC/PLAC): Children who are looked after by a local authority or who left state care through adoption, special guardianship, or child arrangements orders.
- Service Pupil Premium (SPP): Children with a parent in the regular armed forces, those registered as a service child in the past 6 years, or those receiving a pension under specific armed forces compensation schemes
The aim of the Pupil Premium funding is to ensure the progress of eligible children and help reduce the gap in attainment between Pupil Premium and non Pupil Premium children.
Pupil premium is not a personal budget for individual pupils, schools are able to exercise their discretion to spend the Pupil Premium funding as they feel appropriate to achieve these aims.
